Pruning
– Cutting away dead or overgrown branches
or shoots
The best time to prune trees is at the start of
the growing season, this is typically March/April.
At this time of year the sap is rising and this
will lead to the pruning wounds healing more quickly
reducing the possibility of rot setting in..
Lopping
– Cutting away branches or twigs
In this instance we are cutting away live wood.
This may be necessary due to its causing a hazard,
restricting light or simply changing the shape
of a tree.
Shaping
– Cutting to achieve a desired look or shape
Many trees naturally grow in
a certain way, producing what has become recognised
as their own peculiar shape, however, sometimes
a tree will grow out of shape and this can spoil
the look of a garden or backdrop.
Crown
Reduction – Cutting away some of the branches
in the crown of a tree
This is necessary when the crown has become too
heavy to be supported safely by the trunk and
lower branch network. This issue is highlighted
in strong winds. A heavy crown may also restrict
light.
Crown
Raising – Cutting away the lower branches
of the crown
This is done so as to raise the crown to a more
acceptable height. There are any number of reasons
why this may be necessary. It may be to allow
more light into an area or it may be a safety
issue since a low crown could cause danger to
passers by.
Crown
Lowering – Cutting away the upper branches
of the crown
This is done to reduce the height of the crown.
There are any number of reasons why this may be
necessary. It may be to allow more light into
an area or it may be a safety issue since a high
crown can be affected by winds and represent possible
danger.
Deadwooding
– The removal of parts of a tree that die
away
It is very important that this be done as soon
as practically possible for two reasons.
Firstly, dead wood is very unpredictable and could
fall at any time endangering passers by or property.
Secondly, deadwood spreads and more of the effected
area will die away if it is not removed.
Disease
Diagnosis
We recognise the disease patterns in trees and
can recommend the correct treatment.
Disease
Treatment
Having diagnosed a problem in a tree we are able
to treat it thus prolonging the life of the tree.
Felling
Trees are felled in many different ways dependant
upon their height and weight distribution. Indeed,
no two fells are the same. There is no substitute
for the extensive knowledge and years of practical
experience we have in this field.
Pollarding
A beneficial treatment whereby the upper branch network is cut back to the
trunk encouraging stronger growth later. This is particularly useful with
regard shallow rooted trees i.e. Eucalyptus or Silver Birch as it leads to
the trunk thickening and therefore greater stability.
