The four seasons play a very important role in
the ever changing lives of our gardens, trees
and our planet. Therefore, to take best care of
the piece of natural world over which we have
charge, it is crucial that we understand and work
with these seasonal changes.
Time was, when we could quite comfortably say
that the year in the garden was split, fairly
evenly, into four sections of three calendar months
each…
Winter - 3 Months – November to January
Spring – 3 Months – February to April
Summer – 3 Months – May to July
Autumn – 3 Months – August to October
4 x 3 equalling 12 …. and everything in
the garden was rosy.
Through the effects of global warming, greenhouse
gases and other pollutants we are seeing a shift
in this equation to the point where, this writer
believes that before too long, we’ll need
to consider an equation more closely resembling….
Winter – 4 Months – December to March
Spring – 2 Months – April & May
Summer – 4 Months – June to September
Autumn – 2 Months – October &
November
….leading to an even worse case scenario
of a 5 x 1 x 5 x 1 configuration which is great
for sunburn and hypothermia…..not too great
for mother nature !!
This is not scare-mongering…there is a
very real danger that if we do not act to halt
or reverse this trend, we will irreparably damage
the local and global environment. Reference the
PM’s speech and Channel 4 news coverage,
2nd Feb 2007 … at last….they listen.
We can all do something to prevent this of course
and help to avoid the “catastrophic tipping
point” to which the PM refers. There are
some useful contacts to this end on our resources
page but, in a nut shell.., Recycle where possible
and find ways to use less energy ….even
if it’s inconvenient or slightly more expensive
to do so. Our planet will thank you in future.
